FAQs
What Are Elevated Dog Bowls?
Elevated dog bowls are lifted a few inches off the ground onto your pet's level. This promotes healthy posture and helps remove the strain a pet can experience while eating. Elevated bowls come in many shapes, sizes, and types for various breeds and needs.
What Are Raised Dog Bowls For?
Raised bowls are an excellent choice for your pet for various reasons. They promote better posture and help with digestion and swallowing. Extremely popular for handicapped or challenged dogs, elevated bowls are an answer for dogs struggling and straining during their meals. With fewer spills and less cleanup, a raised dog bowl helps to eliminate those dishes sliding across the floor and making a mess.
Are Elevated Dog Food Bowls Good for All Dogs?
They are suitable for most dogs. However, there is an exception. If your dog has a history of bloat or has a close relative who is prone to bloat, they will not be an ideal fit. If you have a large, deep-chested dog (Cane Corso or Great Dane, for instance), we suggest checking with your local vet. Most dogs find raised bowls to be completely comfortable and safe, and for most breeds, they are a wonderful option.
What Material Is Best for My Dog's Bowl?
We recommend stainless steel because of its nonporous, nontoxic properties. Glass and good-quality stoneware can also be good options. Avoid plastic or silicone with harmful plastic toxins or other dishes with toxic glazes or coats.
How Often Does My Elevated Dog Bowl Need Cleaned?
Daily, if possible! Clean your pet's bowl often to keep it free of bacteria growth, algae, or other pesky odors that may develop over time. If you have a dishwasher-safe bowl, wash your pet's bowl frequently, ensuring it's often sanitized for your pet's health.
Can Elevated Dog Dishes Help with Digestion?
Yes, they can. Since the bowls are elevated to your pet's level, it helps them to have comfortable posture. This allows them to relax and focus on chewing their food instead of stretching or leaning to get their meal. Being in a relaxed position helps their digestive system to work at full capacity.
Are Elevated Dog Bowls Good for Senior Pets?
An elevated dog food bowl stand is an excellent choice for seniors and cats. It can help with arthritis and other joint-related pains. We highly recommend these for pets who are growing older, as they will be a safe, comfortable mealtime option for them.
Are Elevated Bowls Good for Cats?
Yes, they are! Elevated dog bowls come in many sizes and can also be used for cats. Follow a measuring guide to determine which height will be most appropriate for your cat and purchase accordingly. This is especially valuable for cats who are seniors, have achy joints, or have any mobility challenges
Are Elevated Dishes Good for Dogs With Health Problems?
This depends entirely on what kind of health problem your dog is struggling with. If it has spinal injuries, joint inflammation, arthritis, poor posture, or another such diagnosis, a raised bowl is a perfect fit. Raised bowls are perfect for dogs post-surgery and provide a great mealtime option for pet owners trying to provide comfortable options to regulate pain. If you are unsure if the raised
bowl fits your pet’s health condition, contact your local veterinarian.
Do Raised Dog Bowls Cause Bloat?
A study by Dr. Larry Glickman, an epidemiologist at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, showed that raised bowls can produce bloat in large dogs with deep chest conformations. (For instance, breeds like Great Danes, Cane Corsos, Irish Settlers, or other large dogs.) Dogs with deep and narrow chests are at a much higher risk for bloat than other pets. If your dog fits this category, you should chat with your veterinarian before choosing a raised bowl. If your dog does not fit in this category, it will be at a much lower risk for bloat and will be an ideal fit for a raised bowl!
Do Elevated Bowls Prevent Bloat?
Unfortunately, no recent studies have pointed to raised bowls preventing bloat. While they rarely cause bloat in most dogs, they are not typically seen as something that will prevent or ward off the chance of bloat.
Do Vets Recommend Raised Dog Bowls?
Yes, many veterinarians recommend raised bowls. Obviously, it will depend on the
dog’s size, age, and situation, but they can be seen as a positive contribution to your pet’s mealtime and overall health and wellness.
Does My Dog Need an Elevated Bowl?
Few dogs will not benefit from a raised dog dish. In fact, most pet owners find them incredibly effective and wish they had purchased them sooner. While they are a good fit for most dogs, they are especially effective for seniors, active pets, and pets with chronic illnesses.
How Do I Know How Tall the Raised Dog Bowl Should Be?
Great question! As a rule of thumb, the top of the bowl should be in line with your dog’s lower chest – the place where their legs meet their body. If your active pooch is too wiggly to measure, err on the side of a lower height or choose an adjustable height dog bowl.
Are Elevated Dog Bowls Safe?
Unless your dog is a large breed and particularly at risk for bloat, raised bowls are a safe option that will offer your pet a comfortable, relaxing mealtime. Raised bowls are not just safe but also promote good posture, improve indigestion, and ease pain in achy joints.
